Who We Are

A Legacy of Success in Tourism

La Romana Port is part of Central Romana Corporation, a privately owned agro-industrial and tourism conglomerate based in La Romana, Dominican Republic. Since the early 20th century, Central Romana’s primary focus has been sugar production.

In the late 1960s, the company embarked on an ambitious diversification strategy, expanding into tourism and free zones. Over the years, Central Romana and its subsidiaries have played a pioneering role in developing tourism in the Dominican Republic.

From Sugar to Tourism: A Rich History

La Romana’s history is deeply rooted in the sugar industry, dating back to the early 1900s when the South Porto Rico Sugar Company established a sugar mill in the region. In the 1960s, the mill and vast surrounding land was acquired by Gulf & Western Industries, which further expanded operations and later diversified into tourism and real estate development. This shift led to the creation of Casa de Campo Resort & Villas, which played a crucial role in transforming La Romana into a world-class tourist destination.

In the 1980s, the sugar mill and related assets were purchased by the Fanjul family, who continue to operate Central Romana Corporation, the largest sugar producer in the region. Under the new leadership, La Romana has further developed its tourism sector, including the growth of La Romana Cruise Port, making it a key economic driver for the region.

Our Journey in Tourism

Central Romana’s commitment to tourism began with the development of Casa de Campo, the world-renowned luxury resort in La Romana. Casa de Campo features championship golf courses, pristine beaches, world-class sports facilities, shopping, fine dining, cultural attractions, and more. To support this thriving destination, we also established key infrastructure, including a Cruise Port, a Mega Yacht Marina, Altos de Chavon and La Romana International Airport, which serve as the foundation for our homeport operations.

A Cruise Destination Since 1992

Our venture into the cruise industry started in 1992 with cruise ship operations on Catalina Island, in partnership with Costa Cruise Lines. This collaboration created exclusive experiences for passengers visiting this idyllic Caribbean paradise.

A decade later, in 2002, Central Romana took a major step forward by transforming its historic sugar shipping facilities into a modern cargo and cruise terminal. This consisted on building a cruise ship pier on the eastern bank of the La Romana River, following a strategic agreement with Costa Cruise Lines.

Since then, La Romana Port has become a key hub for the global cruise industry, welcoming hundreds of cruise ships annually. It serves as both a homeport and a port of call for leading cruise brands, including most brands sailing in the Caribbean from:

  • Carnival Corporation
  • Royal Caribbean Group
  • Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings
  • Independent luxury cruise lines

A Premier Caribbean Cruise Destination

After extensive remodeling, enhancements, and modernization, La Romana Port and Catalina Island are now recognized as one of the safest and most attractive cruise destinations in the Caribbean. Our commitment to excellence continues to drive the growth and innovation of the cruise industry in the Dominican Republic.

Comprehensive Cruise & Tourism Services

La Romana Port operates as a one-stop-shop for cruise lines and travelers, offering a seamless experience by integrating multiple services under one entity. As both a port agent and tour operator, we ensure smooth vessel operations and provide curated shore excursions, including cultural, adventure, and beach experiences. Additionally, we manage ground transfers for passengers, facilitating efficient transportation between the port, La Romana International Airport (exclusive transit passengers & in-bond luggage), and other key destinations. Our role as ground agents further enhances operational efficiency, ensuring that every aspect of a cruise call – logistics, guest services, and security – is handled with expertise and professionalism. This integrated approach positions La Romana Port as a premier Caribbean hub for cruise home porting and tourism.
