La Romana International Airport (IATA: LRM, ICAO: MDLR), inaugurated on December 2000, is located on the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, adjacent to the city of La Romana and Casa de Campo Resort. Developed by Central Romana Corporation through its subsidiary, Airport Management Services, Ltd., the airport replaced the former Punta Aguila International Airport to better accommodate the region’s growing tourism and aviation demands.
Design and Facilities
Inspired by a traditional sugar mill, the airport’s architecture reflects the region’s rich history, earning it the slogan “The Sweetest in the Caribbean.” Covering 3,850,000 square meters, the airport features two separate terminals:
- International Commercial Terminal – Equipped with modern amenities, including advanced lighting, sound systems, air conditioning, check-in counters, electronic security systems, fire detection systems, and X-ray machines. Passenger services include duty-free shops, cafes, international fast-food chains, an outdoor waiting area, taxi services, and banking facilities. For added comfort, the Premier Lounge offers an exclusive outbound lounge experience.
- International General Aviation Terminal – Inaugurated in December 2004, this terminal caters to private and general aviation passengers, providing enhanced privacy and premium services.
Runway and Operations
The airport features a 2,950-meter (9,678 ft) concrete runway (11/29), capable of handling aircraft of all sizes, with flights primarily arriving from North America, Central America, South America, and Europe. In 2024, La Romana International Airport handled over 6,000 aircraft operations, making it the fifth busiest airport in the Dominican Republic.
Historical Context
Before the construction of La Romana International Airport, the region was served by Punta Aguila International Airport, which first opened in the mid-1960s. Originally a dirt landing strip, it was officially named Punta Aguila International Airport (LRM) in 1978 when it began commercial operations. It became the first private international airport in the Dominican Republic to accommodate both commercial and general aviation flights. In 1995, the runway was extended to 2,000 meters, enabling larger aircraft, such as the Boeing 727, to land. However, as tourism and aviation demands grew, it became evident that a more modern and expansive facility was needed, paving the way for the construction of La Romana International Airport, which officially opened in 2000.
Cruise Ship Operations & Connectivity
Since 2003, following the construction of La Romana Port, the airport has played a crucial role in homeport cruise operations, providing a seamless connection for passengers arriving and departing by air. The airport facilitates efficient transit and in-bond procedures, ensuring smooth security, operational, and service processes for cruise passengers.
A Key Hub for Tourism & Transportation
Today, La Romana International Airport remains an essential gateway to the Dominican Republic’s thriving tourism industry, serving as a strategic link between air travel, resorts, and cruise operations. Its commitment to modern facilities and high-quality services ensures a seamless experience for both international and domestic travelers.
